For more than 35 years, the Knights of Columbus has had a close relationship with St. Raphael’s Hospital in our home city of New Haven, Connecticut. With our help, it has become one of the premier centers for cancer treatment in New England. Several years ago we agreed to help St. Raphael’s expand its cancer treatment services to a new center in Hamden. In June, I was proud to join Hartford Archbishop Henry Mansell, Sister Maureen Shaughnessy, the general superior of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth and the doctors and administrators of St. Raphael’s in dedicating the new Father Michael J. McGivney Cancer Center. It is a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility that will provide life-saving care, and it is highly appropriate that the center be named after our founder, a priest who cared so much about the health and welfare of his parishioners. Our assistance to St. Raphael’s Hospital is emblematic of the work that Knights everywhere undertake to relieve suffering.
