He was one of the great Catholic theologians of our time, and a man of deep and abiding faith in God. His final days were reminiscent of Pope John Paul II, who named him a Cardinal. While physical infirmities took away his ability to speak and move his arms, his extraordinary mind was as clear and incisive as ever, even as he went to his heavenly reward. In his farewell speech at Fordham earlier this year, he said, ‘If the Lord now calls me to a period of weakness, I know well that his power can be made perfect in infirmity. Blessed be the name of the Lord.’ Blessed be the soul of Avery Dulles. The Knights of Columbus will keep him and his family in our prayers.

In a special letter sent to all state deputies, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson asked that all councils "schedule a rosary at each local parish on Saturday, Nov. 1, to pray for divine guidance as critical choices are made on Election Day and to entrust the outcome to the maternal intercession of our Blessed Mother." He noted that "much is at stake, especially in states where citizens will have a chance to vote to protect marriage (Arizona, California and Florida), to prevent physician assisted suicide (Washington), to protect the unborn (California, Colorado and South Dakota) and to oppose embryonic stem cell research (Michigan)." He added that in addition, "thousands of candidates will be elected to local, state and federal offices, many of whom will have a voice in deciding whether to legally protect life and marriage." He also asked state deputies to remind all Knights to "pray the Novena for Faithful Citizenship encouraged by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops." .

Statement on Financial Services Markets and the Knights of Columbus

The upheaval in the financial markets in recent days has caused a great deal of concern virtually everywhere, among financial services professionals, regulators and consumers alike. Every major financial institution has been affected by the turmoil because of the complexity of our economy, and we are no exception. But I report to you today that there is no reason to be concerned about the value of your Knights of Columbus annuity or life insurance. Because of our very conservative approach to investing our $14 billion in assets, the impact on the Knights of Columbus has not been material, in other words, it has been minimal – far smaller than for many other organizations and the industry as a whole. We have purposefully avoided investing in the highly complex and speculative investments that have brought disaster to some of America’s most well known companies.
